About this role

The Middle School Assistant Principal is a key member of the CIS Middle School leadership team, supporting student wellbeing, learning, behavior, faculty growth and family partnership. Reporting to the Middle School Principal, the Assistant Principal serves as Dean of Students and as a Child Protection Officer, and facilitates the Student Support Team. The role also contributes to curriculum, coaches and evaluates teachers, and leads professional development. Day to day, the Assistant Principal oversees policies, guest teacher coverage, scheduling and operations, and serves as acting principal when needed. The ideal candidate places students at the center of every decision, balances warmth and compassion with clear, high expectations, and builds strong, trusting partnerships with families in our diverse international community in Grand Cayman.

Responsibilities

Overview of Responsibilities and Duties

Student Engagement and School Climate — Cultivates a vibrant, safe, and positive school culture and demonstrates responsible citizenship.

  • Serve as a dean of students, overseeing conduct, attendance, tardiness, and patterns of concern through Positive Discipline, restorative practices, and age appropriate approaches that promote learning.

  • Facilitate or serve on the Student Support Team (SST) and serve as a Child Protection Officer.

  • Support student placement and transitions, including new student orientation, with elementary and high school leadership and the other Assistant Principals.

  • Coordinate student assemblies and school-wide student engagement events.

Instructional Leadership and Teacher Evaluation — Fosters a shared vision and leadership, learns as a community, uses data, and monitors curriculum and instruction, ensuring high-quality teaching through coaching and performance review.

  • Contribute to the written, taught, and assessed curriculum with the principal, curriculum leaders, and educators, and support curricular initiatives and instructional improvement.

  • Evaluate selected faculty, conducting at least 3 classroom visits per week to observe teaching, give constructive feedback, and support professional growth.

  • Facilitate professional development through coaching, meetings, and in-service training.

  • Manage the Flex schedule, liaising with counselors and grade level leaders.

  • Organize, schedule, and administer MAP Reading, Math, and Science assessments.

Human Relations and Organizational Management — Builds strong relationships and systems that support teaching, learning, and community engagement, ensuring responsibilities are completed efficiently and on time.

  • Work with the principal to implement school policies and ensure effective daily operations; serve as acting principal when the principal is off campus.

  • Coordinate duty schedules and substitute coverage and communication, including outside school hours.

  • Support staff with co-curricular and extra-curricular responsibilities.

  • Coordinate class lists with the registrar and counseling team.

  • Serve on the divisional admissions team and working committees (curriculum, policy, student issues, organizational improvement), and participate in grade, subject, division, and whole-school meetings.

  • Help schedule and attend school events and student activities, such as back-to-school nights, orientations, and community celebrations.

  • Often works in other responsibilities beyond the above job description in support of the school’s mission.

Parent Engagement, Communication and Community Relations — Communicates clearly and honestly with all stakeholders in a timely manner.

  • Communicate and meet regularly with parents, by meeting, email, phone, and social media, about attendance, behavior, academics, and curricular, co-curricular, and pastoral programs.

  • Build partnerships with families through clear, respectful communication and positive outreach.

  • Maintain the middle school announcements webpage to keep families informed in a timely way.

  • Organize the stepping up ceremony with the counselor and 8th grade team.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Education or a related field from an accredited university.

  • Master's degree in Educational Leadership, Administration, or a closely related field.

  • Valid teaching license and eligible for a Cayman Islands Teaching License.

  • Minimum three (3) years leadership experience in a middle school and/or secondary school setting (preferred experience as an assistant / deputy principal or principal)

  • Minimum five (5) years successful teaching experience, with at least three (3) years in a middle school setting

  • Administrative certification in school leadership must be held (or completed prior to July 2027).

  • Experience in international schools, with a strong understanding of diverse student need

Compensation & benefits

Compensation

Salary is competitive with comparable schools and organizations in the region and is established using objective factors including education, leadership experience, professional certifications, and overall qualifications.
